Sun Burnt

Prior to tonight, in the last 8 meetings of the Washington Mystics and the Connecticut Sun, the home team has won . . . every time.

That streak was broken this evening at the Verizon Center, as the visiting Sun defeated the Mystics, 79-71, in front of what appeared to be (on TV) a very sparse hometown crowd.

As they have in each of their three previous games this season, the Mystics fell behind early. At the end of the first period, the Sun led by 12 points, 23-11. The Mystics, once again, were forced to play catch-up. Which they did (somewhat), cutting the Sun's lead to 6 by halftime.

Nevertheless, for the fourth time in four games, the Mystics allowed their opponent to score more than 40 points before the break. And while Washington battled back during the second half to take the lead for a single possession late in the game, they couldn't hang on, and have now dropped to 1 and 3 on the season.

The Mystics' next chance for a "W" comes on Saturday . . . and it's a good chance, as they hit the road to take on the winless and hapless Tulsa Shock. This is a "must-win" for the Mystics . . . a loss to Tulsa would be really embarrassing.

We just don't have enough scorers and we turn the ball over too much. Long season.

The bright spot of the evening......Vickie Bullet was at the game last night and got a standing ovation from the sparse crowd.

Someone told the TV news and the Washington Post to say there were 7,000 people there last night. They must have all been in the owner's box cause the 100 level sections were and have been pretty empty so far.

Nice moment for Vicky-not nice moment when they had two contestants for the word scramble but only one set of words were set out on the floor in time.

Nice.

Only two games so far this season, but already it feels like the first two games of a new franchise without a fan base. Players out of sync, no evidence of a game plan, sparse attendance, fans texting instead of watching, hapless in-game entertainment. But let's look at the bright side: no stampede from the train to the arena, no lines to get in, no lines in the bathroom, no lines for hot dogs or pizza, no lines to get tshirts, room to spread out in your seats! Bonus!

I don't think I have ever been to a Mystics game with so few people in attendance. It seemed there were more people attending last year's workday open practice. The only bright spot was Brenda Frese and friends in the stands. Good observation section 120.

Sat by Brenda Frese at that game. She spent alot of time scrolling the iphone herself. I had the same thoughts section 120!

I don't get why home games are televised. It certainly cuts down on attendance.

Paid attendance was over 7000 but there sure weren't that many people in the stands.

I like the new colors and all, but it does seem like a different team. Kinda disorienting.

Disagree about lack of game plan though. It's there, but we don't have the players to execute it.
